ACADEMIC YEAR, ENROLLMENT AND TUITION FEE

 

Admission Requirements

The Center accepts applications from all persons whom have complete a high school education, and two years of post-secondary education (this pre-requirement may not be necessary to applicants from outside British Columbia, Canada). OCAH seeks students who show the potential to become caring, dedicated and skilled practitioners of Traditional Oriental Medicine, and who can demonstrate the maturity and preparation necessary to undertake the challenges of the program. The Center is committed to a policy of equal opportunity.  Admission is open to all qualified applicants.  Equal educational opportunities will be provided to all persons, regardless of race, religion, gender, national origin, marital status, sexual preference, age or physical handicap.

 

Academic Year

We enroll students three times a year, January, May and September.

One academic year is 30 weeks. It usually starts on the first week of each of these months. New students are urged to register as early as possible. Late registration is accepted on special approval of the Principal only, depending on the space available. 

You may finish the 3 year program within two years if you do not take summer break.

Detailed schedules will be mailed to successful applicants.

 

Tuition Fees and Book and Supply Cost

The tuition for full-time students is $9,500 in Canadian currency per academic year. $1,500 should be paid on the first day of school year accompanied by four post-dated checks in the amount $2,000 each, beginning the first day of the second month through the first day of the fifth month. Tuition will not increase after enrollment. The tuition for part time student is $205 per credit. A credit is given for every 15 hours of study or clinical training.

Students should make allowance fore approximately $500 in book costs and workshops per academic year, which is not included in the tuition fee.

 

Application for Admission

Interested applicants should fill out the application form for admission and send it to the College for consideration. A certificate of admission will be mailed to the accepted applicant as soon as possible.  A non-refundable application fee of $100, which is not credited towards tuition, must accompany all applications.  Upon acceptance a $500.00, non refundable, tuition deposit is required to hold your seat in the program.  

Evaluation of Academic Achievements

Each student must attend courses regularly in order to write the final examination for a given course. Students must achieve a minimum of 60% grade of a course final exam in order to pass and also achieve a minimum of 70% in the comprehensive graduation examination in order to graduate from the College. 

Transfer of Credits

Transfer of credits from another recognized school of TCM may be accepted, but the number of transferred credits of one academic year should not exceed the number of credits (hours) normally earned by a student at the College in one academic year. The above rules and regulations are subject to review from time to time in order to maintain and upgrade the standards of Oshio College of Acupuncture and Herbology.

Financial Assistance

Applicants who are residents of British Columbia may apply to the BC Student Assistance Program, which administers Canada Student Loans, BC Student Loans, and BC Grants. You can apply for your student loan online at www.bcsap.bc.ca or you call them to have an application form mailed out to you at 1-800-561-1818. You may also get the necessary information from their website at: www.aett.gov.bc.ca/studentservices   Applicants residing outside British Columbian may apply to get student loan too. You should contact the student loans office in your region.  

Approval and Accreditation

Accreditation with CTCMA

Oshio College has successfully completed the Review Program of CTCMA and received the Certificate of Approval issued by CTCMA on September 9, 2005. Only three out of approximately Twenty TCM schools in BC received the Certificate of Approval and our college is the only one with the Certificate in Victoria and on Vancouver Island, BC. Mr. Mason Loh, Q.C., Chairman of CTCMA explained the program at a media conference relating to the Review Program on TCM Schools in BC held by CTCMA in Vancouver on June 24, 2005: “Firstly, the program assists prospective students of TCM to select schools based upon third party review and approval, to pursue their education and training. Secondly, the program ensures the public that practitioners who will be subsequently licensed by the College after successful completion of exams and other requirements have been educated to a reasonable standard in this province.”  Please go to www.ctcma.bc.ca for more information.

PCTIA (Formerly PPSEC) Accreditation

Oshio College has been accredited by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency  (PCTIA) since November, 2001. See the PCTIA web site at www.pctia.bc.ca We are designated in British Columbia as an "eligible Institution" under the Canada Student Loans Act.

American Accreditation

Oshio has been evaluated by the American Association Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and has been found to be an eligible institution. As a result, the National Certification Commission Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in the United States have added Oshio to the list of accredited schools. This means our graduates are allowed to write the USA licensing exams.

Professional Accreditation

3 years Acupuncture program (distance Education)  offered by Oshio college is recognized by Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Association of Nova Scotia (www.ATCMANS.CA) and the national Association the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Canada( Nova Scotia Chapter).  All  students completing the program successfully  will be accepted into both associations.

Sister Schools for further Study

Oshio Acupuncture and Herbology has two sister schools.  The first school is Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine (ATOM) located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Credits earned at our college will be recognized by ATOM.  There you may study TCM for one academic year and receive your Bachelor Degree of Science and Masters Degree of Oriental Medicine after completion of a three-year TCM program at our college. The second sister school is Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine located in Changsha, China.  If you wish to receive further study in China,  studying and practicing TCM, or receiving Bachelor Degree, Master Degree or Ph.d .

The three year acupuncture program consists of 2,160 teaching and training hours or  144 credits in total . Among the 2,160 hours, about 768  hours will be conducted at the local station (about 220 hours in each of the first two years, and about 328 hours in the third year).
